Lake Hope (or Hope Lake): 40 Years Later

On July 1, 2013 by hiker

It was our 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday, and we set off at 8 a.m. so we had the trail all to ourselves. The lake is more full than I ever remember seeing it, and the wildflowers are at their absolute peak this week. Leave your headphones at home and walk to the rhythm of the gurgling creeks, clinking stones, and whispering aspens. The pine forest is alive out there and the 1.5 hour walk to the lake is splendid. This is a classic local hike, a great family outing. Go early to beat the flies and the crowds.

In the Telluride Hiking Guide, I couldn’t decide whether to call it Hope Lake or Lake Hope. The USGS maps referred to it as Lake Hope, so I decided to stick with that. As the third edition was published, the Forest Service began installing signs which read “Hope Lake.” However you want to refer to it, they are one and the same.
