Thanks, Alicia, I am glad to hear you'll be in town over the 4th. I would recommend the Sneffels Highline, if you are up to a 5-6 hr hike. There are many wonderful hikes here and you can't go wrong on any of them. Susan

Today, Tomboy Road is open to the last switchback above Savage Basin; it isn't open to the top of the pass yet. Sneffels Highline isn't quite ready for me, as there is still snow to post-hole, which I like to avoid. By July 4th, I suspect these will be clear enough.

The Waterline Trail (technically, an extension of the Deep Creek Trail, on the west side of the Jud Wiebe) is in good shape. The walk is relatively flat and a great place to start getting in shape.

Susan, Just want to share how much we appreciate the Guide. We not only provide it to all our guests, but even though we've lived in Telluride for over 20 years we consult it regularly for guidance and suggestions. We especially enjoy the historical perspectives you've provided. Your accounts of the miners and communities of yesteryear deeply enrich our hiking experience. We know the Telluride area was mined for treasure--your Telluride Hiking Guide is definitely a treasure of ours. Thanks for all your research and efforts!

The La Junta Basin trail is snow bound at this time as with all trails above tree line. I suggest hiking on the south exposed trails, they are much dryer this time of year. Creek crossings could be exciting now, especially in the afternoon.

We just hiked the Waterline Trail yesterday. It took nearly an hour and a half to reach the Mill Creek bridge. The trail is good until it turns into Mill Creek where you hike for 20-30 minutes through some snow patches. Bring your ski poles and, if you don't want to return on that trail, walk downhill to the highway and hitch a ride on the bus, which is a bit irregular, but which supposedly runs around 12:30 and 3:00, or walk back to town on the bike trail. The trails are opening up. Get out there and enjoy! See you there. Susan

Duane, The Judd Wiebe is nearly clear of snow; just a few slippery patches in the trees. Bear Creek is probably good too. I'll try to check it out. The River Trail is a good start: walk from Lift 7 to Society Turn. A new hike, that I will put in the next edition, which I'm working on, is called Keystone Gorge. This one starts in Lawson Hill. The Waterline is a good one too. Normally, there is some snow still in the trees there, but the walk is fairly flat. Feel free to give me a call when you're in town. Your first time here? You're in for a treat. Susan

I will be in Telluride for the first time on May 26, what would be a good 5 mile moderate hike? I am in town for the Mountain Film Festival
